Suddenly, the network is cool again. Tech trends such as the Internet of Things, software-defined networking and growing end-user expectations all add up to a demand for “dialtone” network performance and reliability. But as the data deluge continues to accelerate, and as organizations continue to rely on multiple clouds to achieve business goals, how can the network keep up, much less meet tomorrow’s demands? This e-book looks at the trends that are impacting the enterprise network—the modern network—the issues it creates for NetOps professionals, and how organizations can act today to plan for tomorrow.

The advent of cloud computing and software-defined data center architectures for modern application delivery has made networking more sensitive than ever before. Applications in the digital age require networks that can expand and contract dynamically based on consumer demand. Enterprises are implementing software-defined networking (SDN) to deliver the automation required by these new environments, but the dynamic nature of SDN makes network management and monitoring fundamentally more challenging. Network infrastructure teams need monitoring tools that can provide visibility into these new and constantly changing networks. This white paper explores the importance of SDN monitoring and examines a leading example of a solution, CA Performance Management with CA Virtual Network Assurance integration.

Five false assumptions about SD-WAN By now, almost everyone knows something about software-defined-wide-area networking (SD-WAN). SD-WAN is getting a lot of buzz over its MPLS counterpart, but every innovation in tech comes with certain misconceptions—it’s just part of the territory. Can SD-WAN take the place of internet? SD-WAN doesn’t require on-premises hardware, right? Outside of cost, is it really better than MPLS? Read “Secure Enterprise SD-WAN Myths” for answers to these questions and more, clarity around SD-WAN’s advantages and limitations, and how Forcepoint can help you implement secure SD-WAN for your distributed enterprise. And yes—SD-WAN really is better than MPLS.

The idea of load balancing is well defined in the IT world: A network device accepts traffic on behalf ofa group of servers, and distributes that traffic according to load balancing algorithms and the availabilityof the services that the servers provide. From network administrators to server administrators to applicationdevelopers, this is a generally well understood concept.

Intent-based networking is the difference between a network that needs continuous attention and one that simply understands what you need and makes it happen. It’s the difference between doing thousands of tasks manually and having an automated system that helps you focus on business goals. Cisco DNA is the open, software-driven platform that turns vision into reality. Virtualization, automation, analytics, and cloud, all in one architecture.

Cisco has recently unveiled its new intent-based networking strategy, called "The Network. Intuitive." The goal of intent-based networking is to allow greater levels of automation, security integration, and centralized manageability within a software subscription orientation. Intent-based networking is underpinned by Software-Defined Access (SDA), Cisco's automation engine built upon the company's Digital Network Architecture (DNA), which automates network segmentation, policy enforcement, and troubleshooting. Other core components of the announcement include a refresh of Cisco Catalyst switches, a new licensing model for infrastructure, and an all-in-one management console called DNA Center.

IT has the opportunity to completely redefine the role networking plays in the business. But that requires executing on a vision that continuously aligns the network to ever-changing business needs. Fortunately, the right network architectures and supporting technologies required to deliver on that vision are rapidly becoming available. Automation, programmability, self-protecting, and self-healing capabilities move IT away from “keeping the lights on” and provide more time and opportunity to serve as a strategic partner to business initiatives across functional areas.

Enterprise IT is changing. It’s evolving from a rigid, static, manually configured and managed architecture to one where connectivity is dynamic, application services are on demand, and processes are automated. Enterprise networking is evolving along with IT. This has been evident in the past several years in initiatives such as enterprise digitization and as-a-service consumption models, as well as their enablers, including BYOD, IoT and cloud. Add to this, all of the security implications of each initiative. The evolution of IT requires a network that evolves along with IT’s changing requirements – a network that continuously adapts to ever-changing security threats, and evolving digitization, mobility, IoT and cloud requirements.
